Takeshi has been enlisted by the wealthy Laurens to solve his murder, which saw someone kill the rich socialite and wipe his consciousness.
When the pair meet, Laurens tells Takeshi: "There are very few of us now who saw first-hand what the Envoys could do.”
The Envoys were special soldiers that lived hundreds of years before.
These Envoys were created as the world of Altered Carbon and technology developed.
They had the ability to move from planet to planet as the human race expanded out into space.
But more importantly, they could transfer from one sleeve to another without the accompanying disorientation - called sleevesickness - experienced by most normal people.
The Envoys could move around and be ready straight away for military action when called upon.
Unsurprisingly, the Envoys eventually ended up revoting against their master and the government: The UN Protectorate.
