"Shadow of a Doubt" is the fourth episode of Season Two of Netflix's Altered Carbon. It aired on February 27, 2020, along with the remainder of the second season.

At The Nevermore Hotel Quell tells Takeshi about her captivity. She says the only thing that woke her up was hearing Takeshi's voice. Takeshi tells Quell about Stronghold but she does not remember it, or what Takeshi looked like back then. Quell tells Takeshi that somehow what is inside her went on the rampage and started killing Meths. Takeshi tells her somehow her backup failed and she lost her memories and they will return in time. Takeshi also tells her that she carved a strange mark on the gate and Jaeger has returned and he wants the Angel.
At CTAC headquarters Jaeger has caught the technicians one of them is a Quellist and he will find out who it is even if he has to kill them or torture them in VR.
Quell ask Takeshi what does Jaeger want? Takeshi tells her he wants payback and revenge. Jaeger trained Takeshi to be a killer, but when Jeager ordered Takeshi to murder his Yakuza allies and his sister Rei he turned on them and now Jaeger wants him and Quell dead. Takeshi tells Quell they are marked and CTAC will hunt them anywhere they go. He needs to get them off Harlan's World and Takeshi ask Quell if he trust him and she says yes. Takeshi says he is going to talk to Tanaseda Hideki to get exit passes and Quell volunteers to come along. Takeshi says no because Quell is a wanted woman and if she is seen on the streets it will give CTAC a license to kill her or slag her stack and CTAC kills Envoys.
Down in the lobby Dig tells Poe that somehow Takeshi is going to die. Poe tells Dig not to worry because Takeshi can take care of himself. Dig shows Poe the bounty tells him that is not the problem the problem is Takeshi is a marked man and every bounty hunter including CTAC is looking for him. Poe tells Dig that she is overreacting because he wiped their records. Dig tell Poe the archeologist said that before they died and right on cue Trepp comes through the door. Poe tells Trepp the hotel is shielded, but Trepp tells Poe he made a mistake he forgot to disconnect after he called her which explains how she found them. Trepp ask Poe "where Takeshi is hiding?" Poe responds "Takeshi is not here get lost!" and goes for his guns. Takeshi comes down the elevator and Poe blast Trepp with a digital shotgun blast. Turns out Trepp was a hologram and Poe blew it. Takeshi tells Poe he blew it because he let Trepp into the hotel and she will tell her bounty hunter friends where they are. Takeshi is also mad that his sleeve has a bio-tracker which means they can find him. Poe says he is going call Trepp but Takeshi says he will take care of it and that they should pack because they will be casting out. Dig tells Takeshi to forget it because outside the Harlan's Day Street Festival is going on CTAC will be patrolling the streets. Takeshi ask Dig who she is and Dig identifies herself. Takeshi identifies her as an AI and she is bounded by confidentiality. Dig ask Takeshi to pay her and Takeshi hands over the credits. Takeshi tells Dig to go upstairs and help Quell treat her wounds then he turns to Poe and fires him on the spot before he walks out. Dig tries to apologize and Poe tells her that it was not her fault or Takeshi's it was his and he tells Dig the hotel is now hers and he gets ready for his defrag.
On the streets the Harlan's Day Street Festival is in full swing. Takeshi dawns a hoodie and a mask to bypass the CTAC patrols so he can get into Trepp's club
At the casting station Danica Harlan meets with Dugan in his human form. On the platform a young girl is holding things up. Danica pulls the girl aside and gives her false hope and sort of tells her what she did with Konrad Harlan.
At the Yakuza hideout Jaeger talks to Hideki. Hideki tells Jaeger that Takeshi deserves protection because he solved the Bancroft Case and was pardoned for bringing down Rei, then he gourds Jaeger about how Takeshi escaped him once again. Jaeger then grabs the Songspire Tree and breaks a branch off and crushes it into dust. Hideki tells Jaeger he should not have done that and Jaeger threatens him: "hand over Takeshi Kovacs and I will let you live. If you refuse I will kill you and wipe out the Yakuza like I wiped out Stronghold and Gottfrid Saito." This touches a nerve and Hideki looks on holding what is left of the songspire in his hands.
Takeshi meets up with Trepp and gets her to call off the bounty. Trepp says she will think about it. Takeshi has a counter offer he will give her Anil in exchange for his freedom. Takeshi explains after Trepp and him brought in those five stacks CTAC moved Anil from 256 to 4 number 3 is her, 2 is Quell, and 1 is Takeshi himself. Takeshi says he will find him and clear their names. Trepp tells Takeshi to run because CTAC spotted them and are headed their direction.
Trepp takes Takeshi to her house and her son TJ opens the door. Takeshi finds out TJ did not pay his rent on his sleeve and he should not have been on the street. Trepp tells Takeshi the truth TJ was blown up by a Quellist landmine and he was cast into this sleeve as a replacement since she could not get a clone. Because of the fees Trepp needs to catch Anil or CTAC will take TJ and she will go to prison. Takeshi makes another deal with Trepp: work with him as his partner and they can get this cleared up.
Back at the Nevermore Poe is reading poems in his namesakes book while Dig is watching the historical broadcast. Dig ask Poe where the first aide kit is and Poe tells her it is under the bar and she pulls out a whiskey bottle. Dig turns off the broadcast and tells Poe to put down the book. Poe tells her if he reboots he will forget everything and Takeshi was right to fire him. Dig tells Poe Takeshi is an ass and she does not have a purpose anymore. Poe tells her he knows what it is like because he sat vacant on Earth for two centuries. Dig tells Poe she needs a purpose which is why Takeshi hired her.
Takeshi goes to Hideki but the heavy tells him to wait. Takeshi hands over his guns and he does wait. Yukito comes over and tells Takeshi he should not be there. Takeshi tells him he is not there to take his inheritance or to be the leader of the Yakuza he is there to talk to Hideki.
In VR Takeshi talks to Jaeger the last mission did not go well and Jaeger agrees to take Takeshi back to Harlan's World. In the present Jaeger is still trying to break the Quellist technician to find out what happened.
Meanwhile Danica is preparing for that evenings fireworks. Dugan tells Danica she is still gloating over that botched exaction and needs a distraction. Dugan volunteers to stay and disagrees with Danica's management style. He leaves and tells her he will see her that night after the fireworks.
Poe goes upstairs to check on Quell and offers her a drink. Poe tells Quell that both of them have been counsel for him. Quell still does not know what he means and Poe tells Quell she left a part of herself inside Takeshi after Stronghold. Quell says Poe has a way with words and that trips a memory of Lizzie. Quell ask Poe what his question was and Poe ask her if she miss being who she is. Quell tells Poe that it is like being out in the middle of the ocean without sight of land and you are drowning, but she tells him her memories will come back with time. Quell tells Poe to bring up the Array so she can unlock her memories. Poe leaves and Quell plugs into the Array to find out her history.
Back at Hideki's Takeshi shows him the image and Hideki says he will look into it. Hideki ask if this is what he is looking for, and why he was here but Takeshi tells him he is casting out. Hideki tells him he is stuck. To cast out he will have to confront Danica and she will deny his request and CTAC will arrest him making casting impossible. Takeshi tells him it is the only option but Hideki counters if they find out he let Takeshi and Quell get away CTAC will murder him. Finally Hideki reveals the truth Jaeger was there and he has a price on their heads. Takeshi ask him if he told him. Hideki tells Takeshi he is under a blood debt and both of them are his concern. Takeshi tells him he betrayed them and lives with the guilt. Hideki tells Takeshi he has lived with guilt and agrees to set everything up and tells him to remember what he told him.
Back at the Nevermore Quell turns on the array and Danica is boasting that Quell was a mass murderer, that the Envoys were bad, that CTAC winning Stronghold was good, and the regular CTAC, Meth, and Harlan's World propaganda. Takeshi comes in and Quell ask him if it was true? Takeshi tells her it is propaganda and tells her her real name and her purpose. Quell tells Takeshi she might harm him, but Takeshi tells Quell she won't harm him and he loves her. Quell finally realizes who she is and for the first time in three centuries Quell and Takeshi do something they have not done in a long time. They make love to each other.
At the Meth party Jarek confronts Danica and she compares it to a pit of vipers. Hideki comes in and crashes the party and tells Danica to restore the casting facilities. Danica tries to shrug it off and agrees to set everything up. Hideki leaves a note and is confronted by Dugan on the way out. Hideki rebukes him and heads out. Jarek tells Danica that Jaeger is up to something in B block and Danica tells him to look into it.
At CTAC headquarters it is revealed that the prisoner is Lila. Jaeger has pulled her teeth, he has shocked her, he has brutalized her by hitting her with tools, and when this scene begins he is about to waterboard her. Jaeger ask her what she knows about the construct but she won't tell him and he pulls her teeth. Just then Simone comes in and tells Jaeger that Lila is getting a pardon from the governor. Jaeger releases her and Lila laughs as she walks out.
Back at the Nevermore Takeshi and Quell are resting after their lovemaking when the roots of the songspire envelop them. Quell wakes up, puts on her cloths, and leaves before Takeshi notices she is gone. In VR Lizzie talks to Poe about her life and about how Poe saved her after Rei tortured her at the Wei Clinic and she lost her mind. Dig comes over and ask Poe to introduce her to Lizzie, but the problem is this is a memory and Poe is glitching again. Poe tells Dig the truth he will need to reboot which could erase everything. Poe tells her he has no choice he needs to reboot or his core will melt and his data will be corrupted. Dig then tells Poe her plan she is going to help him with the defrag and transfer his memory files over to a remote server so he does not lose everything when he reboots. Poe thanks her for the offer and Dig tells him thats her job she records and she will help him every step of the way.
Back at the party Jaeger confronts Danica about why she stopped the torture. Danica tries to shrug it off but Jaeger ask her for the truth why is she playing games with him and why is she messing with the war? Before he could get an answer a Meth pulls Danica aside and they toast. Dugan pulls the note that Hideki left him and he knows exactly what is going on and pockets it. Dugan and Jaeger notice something is up and head to defuse it and Dugan gives the cast out order. Jaeger goes over to the rockets and the truth comes out Danica is using them to execute the Quellist for Meth entertainment. Jaeger knocks the guards out of the way but the launch still goes on the rockets are fired at the Angel Array and the Quellist are killed and the Angel destroys the Quellist hideout as fireworks burst over Harlan's World.
Back at the Nevermore Takeshi wakes up Quell is gone and Hideki is on the ONI. He tells Takeshi he made the arrangements and tells her Quell is gone. Takeshi gets out of bed, gets dressed, and goes to find Quell and Hideki.
At Hideki's Quell helps end his life and transfers his energy to the songspire.
In town TJ is watching the fireworks and he goes inside and tells Trepp he does not like fireworks because they remind him of the war. Myka confronts Trepp about her deal and tells her she is playing with fire. Myka reveals she was an archaeologist before the war and when they were driven off Trepp saved her. Takeshi pings Trepp about Quell they have to find her fast because she might be on the rampage.
At Danica's apartment Jarek and Danica are having sex and Jarek reveals he borrowed someone's sleeve but he will give it back when they are done.
At CTAC headquarters Jaeger tells the Wedges that Danica killed the Quellist and used the fireworks and the Angel to bomb their hideout. Jaeger ask for an update on Evergreen and Batu tells him who ever it is will arrive on time.
Takeshi arrives at Hideki's and finds all the Yakuza dead. Takeshi pulls Hideki's stack and puts it in the slot in the floor and talks to him in VR. Hideki tells him what happened and tells him he regrets what he did and tells Takeshi the truth.
At the casting station Dugan tries to get off world. He fights though the mob and Quell gets in the elevator with him.
Back in VR Takeshi is learning the truth and Konrad Harlan and Hideki tell it to him. Slowly the stack starts to degrade Trepp arrives just in time and pulls Takeshi out of it before the stack infects him. Takeshi tells Trepp Quell is after the founders and Dugan is next on the list. They race to the casting station.
At the casting station Dugan is dead Quill has fried his stack and plants pulse mines all over the facility. Jaeger arrives just as Takeshi Prime descends the elevator. They look up to see the casting station explode as Jaeger welcomes Takeshi Prime back to Harlan's World.
